NSA GC Clarifies Tech Industry's Role in Surveillance

Rajesh De, the National Security Agency's general counsel, sought to dispel concerns that the federal government and U.S. companies have close ties in NSA surveillance efforts, saying the agency's references to businesses as its "partners" in data collection have been misconstrued. Speaking Monday at a Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board hearing in Washington, D.C., De said the public shouldn't read too much into former NSA contractor Edward Snowden's leaks of PowerPoint slides and other documents that make references to U.S. service providers serving as partners with the NSA. Among Snowden's disclosures is the "Corporate Partner Access" program, which, according to The Washington Post, the NSA uses to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to major U.S. telecommunications providers for access to their networks. Verizon Communications Inc., AT&T Corp. and other major telecommunications companies declined to discuss the program with the Post. Affiliate publication Corporate Counsel has more.
