Restart: After 16 days of a government shutdown and with the debt ceiling deadline only hours away, the stalemate in Congress finally ended. Late last night President Obama signed into law a bill that funded the government and extended the debt ceiling until Jan. 15 and Feb. 7, respectively. The Washington Post reports. Bump: The Judiciary and federal defenders have another reason to smile. As part of the budget deal, $51 million in additional funding will go to the courts and defenders. However, that does little to replenish the $350 million that was stripped from the budget during sequestration. Legal Times' Todd Ruger reports. Special Election: Newark Mayor Corey Booker won the special election to fill the vacant New Jersey senate seat. Booker, a Democrat, won handily over Republican Steve Lonegan.
