| Patton Boggs has added former chairman of the Federal Election Commission Donald McGahn as a partner, the firm said today. A prominent Republican, McGahn spent five years at the FEC, serving as chairman in during the 2008 election cycle and vice-chairman in 2013, a tenure marked by major upheavals in campaign finance laws. He joins the firm's political and election law group, which includes partners Benjamin Ginsberg, previously a top lawyer for the campaigns of Mitt Romney and George W. Bush, and William McGinley, former counsel to the Republican National Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. McGahn is a welcome addition for Patton Boggs, which has seen the departure of 30 partners since the start of the year, according to an analysis by The National Law Journal. The Washington Post first reported McGahn's plan to join Patton Boggs. "We are delighted that Don McGahn will be returning to the firm," managing partner Edward Newberry said in a news release. "He is an extraordinarily talented attorney whose experience as an FEC chairman and commissioner provide him with a deep understanding of the evolving complexities of the laws that govern our nation's elections." McGahn worked at Patton Boggs as an associate in the litigation group from 1995 to 1999, then went on to spend nearly 10 years as the general counsel for the National Republican Congressional Committee. | |||
