President Barack Obama has decided to keep Kathryn Thomson as the top lawyer at the U.S. Transportation Department. A key figure in Obama administration efforts to lower oil consumption, Thomson has been Transportation's acting general counsel since May of this year, and on Thursday the president announced his intention to make her his nominee to serve as the department's U.S. Senate-confirmed chief legal officer. Since leaving Sidley Austin to join the agency in 2009 as counselor to then-Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Thomson played significant roles in Obama's "Blueprint for a Secure Energy Future" and fuel and greenhouse gas emission standards for automobiles.
