| After revelations earlier this year about the National Security Agency's surveillance programs, public scrutiny has increased on companies' efforts to protect their customers' privacy. Former U.S. government contractor Edward Snowden's leaks to international media outlets revealed far-reaching NSA access into user information held by technology companies. The tech industry has since sought to increase the NSA's transparency on its data gathering in an effort to deflect concerns that the government can easily acquire customer information. CorpCounsel.com recently discussed the privacy landscape with J. Trevor Hughes, president and chief executive officer of the International Association of Privacy Professionals. The organization is holding its annual Privacy Academy in Seattle from September 30 to October 2. An edited version of that conversation follows.
