Former D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty has joined Perkins Coie's business development department in the Palo Alto, Calif. office. Fenty, the mayor of Washington from 2007 to 2011, was previously special counsel at Klores Perry Mitchell, a litigation firm in Washington. In his new role as business development manager, Fenty will help to expand the firm's emerging companies and venture capital practice. He will continue to be a special advisor to venture capital fund Andreessen Horowitz. Fenty was not immediately available for an interview. The former mayor has long ties with Perkins Coie, a Seattle-based firm with more than 900 attorneys in 19 offices. When he was running for reelection, Fenty hired Perkins Coie partner Marc Elias, chairman of the political law practice. Fenty's estranged wife, Michelle Cross Fenty, was of counsel at the firm. Michelle currently works for the Inter-American Development Bank as the representative in Trinidad and Tobago. "His experience in the public and private sectors will be invaluable to many of our emerging company clients as they navigate the complexities of growing their businesses," Ralph Arnheim, chairman of the firm's emerging companies and venture capital practice, said in a written statement. "We're absolutely thrilled that Adrian is joining our team and look forward to collaborating with him as we expand our practice and bolster our clients." Fenty re-election hopes were dashed when he lost the Democratic primary to Vincent Gray in 2010. Gray would go on to be elected mayor.
