100 years from the opening of the Peace Palace in the Hague

August 28th marks the centennial anniversary of the Peace Palace in The Hague. Since its inauguration, the Peace Palace has become a worldwide icon of Peace and Justice. A chain of special events are scheduled between August 28th and September 21st, the UN Day of Peace, to emphasize The Netherlands' unwavering commitment to a better world in which conflicts are settled peacefully.

The commeration will involve the presentation of the official book '100 years Peace Palace' about the present role and significance of the Peace Palace. Afterwards a buste of the pacifiste Bertha von Suttner will be unveiled in the main hall of the Peace Palace.

Special Guests

His Majesty King Willem-Alexander will receive a commemorative book at the start of the celebration. Secretary-general of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon and Prime Minister Mark Rutte will both deliver a speech.

In the afternoon, the Netherlands Female Youth Choir, conducted by Wilma ten Wolde, will perform and two conferences will take place:

During the Ministerial conference on peaceful dispute resolution, chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Frans Timmermans, the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully will be examined.

The Hague Institute for Global Justice will present findings from The Hague Approach, a flagship research project of the Institute, which explores lessons learned from international peacebuilding efforts. This presentation marks the start of a high-level conference on Achieving Sustainable Peacebuilding: Retrospect and Prospect scheduled for 29 August.
